Pi Network leverages a modified version of the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP) to achieve a lightweight, energy-efficient consensus mechanism that allows users to "mine" PI tokens directly from their smartphones without significant battery drain or environmental impact associated with proof-of-work. The network is currently operating in an "Enclosed Mainnet" phase, where transactions are allowed within the Pi ecosystem but external connectivity and direct fiat exchange are restricted, enabling developers to build and test Pi Apps and users to complete KYC before an anticipated Open Mainnet launch. The primary utility of the PI token is envisioned as a medium of exchange within a burgeoning ecosystem of decentralized applications (Pi Apps) and for peer-to-peer transactions among its users. The project aims to create an accessible cryptocurrency for everyday use, fostering a global community capable of transacting and building on its platform. However, the token's utility and value are currently constrained by the Enclosed Mainnet restrictions, limiting its free exchange and integration with the broader crypto market. Despite not having an open mainnet or being listed on major exchanges, Pi Network boasts a massive registered user base, claiming tens of millions of "Pioneers" globally.
